Thank you so much for choosing Tomie Horton Photography! I'm thrilled at the opportunity to work with you. I just wanted to share some information to help you prepare for your experiences with me. I want to maximize every minute together and make sure that you both truly enjoy the experience (and the photos that will be captured!).

What you wear is one of the keys for a successful session. Clothing complements who you are as a family, speaks to the environment in which the session is taking place, and coordinates with the home where final images will be displayed. Your style should be as unique as your family, so I’ve put together some clothing advice for a creative, comfortable session.

For parents, I suggest colors that coordinate, but not match.  With your sweet little baby being the focus of the session, neutral colors tend to work best, steering away from logo’d t-shirts or bold patterns. Casual clothing is perfect and bare feet look most natural in a home setting.

Mom’s, consider a beautiful maxi dress or a pretty cotton gown that will be both comfortable and oh-so-sweet while you are cuddling with your new baby. When we do some of the snuggling parent images, you may wish to have a tight fitting onesie or a cute diaper cover for baby.

Newborns are so small it is often very difficult to photograph them in cute outfits as they are usually swimming in them, and just tend to look silly. I will bring several neutral colored baby wraps that showcase just how tiny your little one is! If you also have a cute wraps, please get them ready. I want to incorporate your personal items as much as I can to add your personal touch into your photography.

I'll gladly retouch boo-boos, scars, and blemishes if required so no stress!

Do not schedule vaccinations the day before your session.

Shots make babies cranky and are stressful for parents too.

Lay out any outfits the night before so they are ready to go and wrinkle free. Try all garments on to ensure a proper and flattering fit.

Pack all the personal items that you want to incorporate into photography if any.

(For on-location sessions) Print out any directions or map it on your phone so that you can plan your commute accordingly. Plan to arrive to the location 5 minutes before your start time to allow for any last minute wardrobe, make up or hair fixed.

Prior to our session, try and keep the baby awake and stimulated as much as possible. You can give baby a bath, play for awhile, and try to feed him/her about the time I am due to arrive. A full belly makes for a sleepy baby!

After the baby is full, make sure they are burped really well. Gas can take a sleepy, happy baby to an uncomfortable and irritable one in seconds.

(Hosting your session at home)
Turn the heat up to around 26 -29 degrees about 30 minutes prior to your session. This will ensure a comfortable and sleepy baby!

(Hosting your session at home)
Tidy up any areas where you might want photographs. have dad or someone else take care of that!

I love to shoot in nursery, bedrooms and living room. Don’t worry about a spotless house, we just need a small area with beautiful light to work in.

Be patient. If the baby gets fussy or alert, don’t worry. A baby can sense your anxiety and we want to keep the environment as mellow as possible. I will try and get the baby comfortable again, but if that just doesn’t seem possible, we’ll take a break or we’ll work with what they’re giving us. Sometimes the best pictures are ones when baby isn’t necessarily doing what we want.

And MOST importantly, the only job you have while we are together is to RELAX. I want this to be a time where you can soak in that new baby smell, cuddle with your loved ones, and be "in the moment."
