Itty Bitty 2019 (35 of 48).jpg

Thank you so much for choosing Tomie Horton Photography! I'm thrilled at the opportunity to work with you. I just wanted to share some information to help you prepare for your experiences with me. I want to maximize every minute together and make sure that you both truly enjoy the experience (and the photos that will be captured!).

What you wear is one of the keys for a successful session. Clothing complements who you are as a family, speaks to the environment in which the session is taking place, and coordinates with the home where final images will be displayed. Your style should be as unique as your family, so I’ve put together some clothing advice for a creative, comfortable session.

Plan your outfits completely a few days before your session. Here are some general rules of the road for making picture-perfect wardrobe decisions:

a palette of 3-4 colors and mix it up, including both pants and dresses (You want a cohesive feel, but without being overly ‘matchy-matchy’.) Picture a page in a clothing catalog where everyone coordinates, but nobody stands out more than the rest.

clothes that flatter your body type and coordinate well with the rest of the group

layered clothing

sleeveless shirts and shorts, which tend to not flatter adults

logos and bold patterns

non-fussy, casual clothes to keep babies and kids comfortable and for natural expressions of their real personalities

fitted clothes

big bows, any sort of make up

baggy clothes

I'll gladly retouch boo-boos, scars, and blemishes if required so no stress!

Do not schedule vaccinations the day before your session.

Shots make babies cranky and are stressful for parents too.

Plan your outfits. Be sure to wear clothing that fits well and your’re comfortable in. Try all garments on to ensure a proper and flattering fit.

Print out any directions or map it on your phone so that you can plan your commute accordingly. Plan to arrive to the location 5-10 minutes before your start time to allow for any last minute wardrobe, make up or hair fixed.

Pack all the personal items that you want to incorporate into photography if any.

Get plenty of rest the night before. A well rested client is going to feel much more relaxed and look their best.

Place your clothing on hangers, not in a bag. This will keep all outfits wrinkle free. Also bring a brush and extra make up for touch ups.

Prior to our session, try and keep the baby awake and stimulated as much as possible. You can give baby a bath, play for awhile, and try to feed him/her about the time I am due to arrive. A full belly makes for a sleepy baby!

After the baby is full, make sure they are burped really well. Gas can take a sleepy, happy baby to an uncomfortable and irritable one in seconds.

(Hosting your session at home)
Turn the heat up to around 26 -29 degrees about 30 minutes prior to your session. This will ensure a comfortable and sleepy baby!

(Hosting your session at home)
Tidy up any areas where you might want photographs. have dad or someone else take care of that!

I love to shoot in nursery, bedrooms and living room. Don’t worry about a spotless house, we just need a small area with beautiful light to work in.

Leave all of your belongings in your vehicle beside your personal items thatyou want to incorporate into your photography.

Be patient. If the baby gets fussy or alert, don’t worry. A baby can sense your anxiety and we want to keep the environment as mellow as possible. I will try and get the baby comfortable again, but if that just doesn’t seem possible, we’ll take a break or we’ll work with what they’re giving us. Sometimes the best pictures are ones when baby isn’t necessarily doing what we want.

And MOST importantly, the only job you have while we are together is to RELAX. I want this to be a time where you can soak in that new baby smell, cuddle with your loved ones, and be "in the moment."

Bad Weather

In case of the bad weather, I will contact you 24 to 28 hours prior to your session and re-locate or reschedule your session.

Personal Items

If you’re wondering about how you can make your experience personal and memorable, feel free to bring along any items that are special to you. I want your session to scream YOU, so if that means bringing your four legged friend along or props that tell your story, please do! We can incorporate them into your photos in a fun way! Maybe it’s a hobby you family/children love and share, maybe it’s books you love read to your children, blanket that you would like to sit on. Whatever you want in your photos, I’ll do my best to make it happen!
